Hi Maria,
Belated thanks for adding me to your blogroll. I hope your semester of independent study on second language learning is going well. Yesterday I put up a post on 'Many Englishes' re: recent articles by some notables in ESL on teaching grammar. If you haven't already seen it, please drop by.
:-) Best wishes.

It sounds like the dinner was a huge success! The seating arrangements reveal so much about the gendered norms and roles in Burmese culture. It will be interesting to see how the children negotiate between "home culture" and 21st century American cultural values and norms.

Running community education at NorthTec has introduced me to the best of people. Passionate about their field, or their people or bringing learning to an area. One guru is introducing Organiponica raised bed gardens, his buddist background keeps him grounded whilst his passion means his message is being heard and sort after near and far; another who's people have few transport options has worked hard to provide facilities for NorthTec to bring a miriade of courses. I think this could be the coolest job I have ever had.

Thanks for the info, Deana! I'm so bummed I can't go tonight, it sounds so interesting. Do you have any other information on refugee resettlement in Vermont? I'd love to learn more about it...and wondering, too, if the film will be shown elsewhere.

And I'm glad you like the blog!

Hi. I don't know you, but I'm LJ Friends with P and know your former coworker, D.D. :) I just thought I'd let you know about an event where I work tonight that might interest you. It's part of a film program we do. One of the films (which I just previewed) is about the refugee resettlement experience in Vermont. A good chunk of it focused on language learning. It's at 7pm at Bennington Museum. $5 per person. Email me at deanarae at livejournal if you would like more info.

Your blog is fascinating!

I think the bigger/better houses or spaces are part of the American way. it is sad but true. Bigger houses, bigger cars, bigger food.... It is really sad to think about what we have come to symbolize to the rest of the world.

This question takes on a very different meaning when one works for the Red Cross. Everyone should have a "to go" bag that contains important documents, medications, clothes, batteries, battery powered flashlight, food, water, etc... You never know when a fire, flooding, snow/icestorm will strike and you will have to leave your home.

If the question is geared towards what would I take for sentimental reasons, the only thing that I can't replace would be my boys baby books. Nothing else I can think of is one of a kind.

What would you take?

I thought about this for a while yesterday and try to determine what I needed...

If given 20 minutes to evacuate, I would take my documentation, my phone, iPod and camera, a jacket, a sweater, a pair of pants, three changes of socks and underwear and two t-shirts.

The thing that really made me worry (yes, worry) was would I be able to take my dog. Everything else is replaceable, even things like documentation and the photos that are near and dear to me, but my dog is my friend, even though he is a bit weird (well, so am I) and I am blessed to be in a reasonable situation where I don't have to worry about losing him.
